Safety for Motorcyclists

There are few things in this world that are as exhilarating as riding a motorcycle. They can offer a fun, and inexpensive way to travel, as well as offering a lot of speed and excitement. Over the past two years when gas prices soared, many people considered trading in their expensive gas-guzzling cars and SUV's for a sportier, gas-sipping motorcycle. I am one of those people, and it is a decision that I didn't take lightly. While riding a motorcycle is extremely fun, it can be extremely dangerous if you don't take the proper precautions while riding.

Eighty percent of the people who have had a motorcycle accident have done so within the first six months of learning to ride. For this reason, it is important to always be thoughtful and careful while riding, and wear the proper safety equipment so that if there is an accident, you have better chances of walking away uninjured. Probably the most important piece of equipment when learning to ride is a good helmet. It should fit snugly, but not impede your view or range of motion. It can save your life if you should lay the bike down, and it is one of the best investments you can make. Most states require riders to wear helmets, but some don't. Some states only require protective eye wear for riders, whether it is a shield on a helmet, or glasses.

Learning to ride safely and thoughtfully is a great way to experience the open road. Take it slow when starting out. While a lot of people can't wait to feel the road in front of them, sometimes it is too soon to hit the streets. Practice in an open parking lot or on quiet streets before deciding to take a major trek on the highway. You will be glad you did when you arrive safely at your desired destination with rider, equipment and bike insurance excess all still safely in toe.
